Conflict at the Israel-Lebanon Border as Iran Increases Syrian Activity
Impending conflict on the border between Israel and Lebanon as Iran moves more troops and material into Syria. Over the past few weeks, Iranian troops and arms have passed through southern Syria toward Lebanon. Due to this movement’s proximity to the Israeli border, Prime Minister of Israel Binyamin Netanyahu commented in a press statement that the Israeli government “will do everything in its power to protect the Israeli people.”
This coded threat has real implications, as additional Israeli troops have been deployed to the Israeli-Lebanese border. The response by Iran has been to send additional material and personnel reinforcements through the land-route.
There is currently a military standoff at the border, with Israeli troops on one side and Iranian-equipped Hezbollah troops on the other. As of now, there has not been an escalation of violence, and shots have yet to be fired. The international community is holding their breath as the threat of conflict grows.
